Both Syrian and Egyptian sides agreed on coordinating political stances between Damascus and Cairo, as well as boosting mutual coordination on the level of combatting terrorism in both countries.
It is worth mentioning that this is not the first visit Gen. Mamluk makes to Cairo. He had previously paid a visit in September 2015 in which he met President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi.
The previous visit was followed by media openness on both countries. Besides, an Egyptian media delegation visited Damascus, meeting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.
Earlier this month, Cairo voted in favour of a UN Security Council resolution drafted by Russia on halting violence in Syria. The move angered Saudi Arabia, one of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s main backers.
Mamluk was appointed as the head of national security in 2012 after a major explosion in Damascus killed four top security officials.
He is considered to be a key member of President Bashar al-Assad’s inner circle and is blacklisted under EU sanctions.
Mamluk’s last public appearance was in May 2015 in a meeting between al-Assad and the head of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee, Alaedin Boroujerdi.
