Ufree calls on empowered Egyptian army to follow court orders

OSLO, (PIC)-- The Oslo-based European Network to Support the Rights of Palestinian Prisoners (Ufree) has called on the Supreme Council for the Armed Forces, which was handed power in Egypt to comply with court orders to free Palestinians held in the country's jails.

”There are dozens of Palestinians who have unjustly been placed in Egyptian prisons. They have no sin but are paying the price for being affiliated with the Palestinian cause,” said Ufree president Mohammed Hamdan on Wednesday.

Palestinians held there have gone on hunger strike after the revolution that ousted former president Hosni Mubarak amid demands for their court-ordered freedom.

The recipient of power, the Egyptian army, has ordered the release of 14 of all 44 prisoners, but only two have been released so far.

”We hope Egypt will enter a new stage of democracy and human rights and forever turn the pages of tyranny after the changes ensuing the Jan. 25th revolution,” the statement says.

Ufree is due to hold a major conference promoting Palestinian prisoner rights on March 6 at UN headquarters in Geneva.
