Palestinian gov't warns PA of recognizing Israeli occupation as a Jewish state

GAZA, (PIC)-- Spokesman for the Palestinian government Taher Al-Nunu warned the Palestinian Authority (PA) of the repercussions of complying with the demands of Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman on the recognition of the Jewish state as a condition for peace talks.

In a press release on Monday, spokesman Nunu said that Lieberman's demands portend Israeli intentions to ethnically cleanse the 1948 occupied lands of its Palestinian indigenous population.

The spokesman stressed that Lieberman's demands dealt another blow to those who pinned hopes on their talks with Israelis and indicated that Israeli leaders makes a mockery of the Palestinian negotiator and deal with him as a subordinate who must obey orders.

He called on the PA to immediately stop its talks with the Israeli occupation state and abide by the national consensus that opposes these frivolous negotiations that are detrimental to the Palestinian cause.

In this context, informed Palestinian sources revealed that the PA is making efforts to persuade the Israeli side to extend the alleged freeze on settlement construction in the West Bank as the issue causes great embarrassment to the Palestinian side.

In order to get the Israeli side convinced, the PA announced it would backtrack on its demand for a complete halt to settlement and would make do with a temporary freeze for only three months, the sources added.

Chief negotiator of the PA Saeb Erekat, national security advisor to the Israeli premier Yitzhak Molko, and US envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell started talks in Washington in order to reach a formula on the settlement issue agreed upon by all parties and to prepare for another round of direct talks.
