Hamas: Fayyad's meeting with Barak aimed at pleasing the US administration

DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- The Hamas Movement strongly denounced Salam Fayyad for his meeting Monday with Israeli war minister Ehud Barak, saying it was intended for pleasing the American administration and burnishing Israel's image that was terribly distorted after its deadly attack on Freedom Flotilla convoy.

In a statement issued by its information office, Hamas considered this meeting a step forward in the reprehensible security cooperation between the Palestinian Authority (PA) in Ramallah and the Israeli occupation, and described it as another umbrella used to cover Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people.

Hamas stressed that Fayyad does not represent the Palestinian people and his meeting with Barak is a step that provokes the feelings of the Palestinians who are exposed to constant injustice and aggression by Barak and his government.

For his part, Dr. Abdulsattar Qassem, a professor of political science at Al-Najah university, stated that Fayyad-Barak meeting would only bring more catastrophes on the Palestinian people because Mahmoud Abbas's authority was never against the settlement expansion but against it only in the media.

"These are old and frequent meetings and they have not stopped for tens of years despite the ongoing Zionist crimes against our people, the thing which indicates that the matter is beyond the Palestinian national rights," Dr. Qassem said in a press statement to the Palestinian information center (PIC).

He added that the one who wants to bring back the Palestinian rights or stop Israel's aggressive practices and policies does not act like Abba's authority.

Noted political analyst Naim Baroud also echoed what Dr. Qassem said, considering all the meetings held by the PA with Israeli officials "suspicious" and "frivolous" because the PA turns a blind eye to Israel's ongoing crimes against its people and homeland

For his part, political analyst Ibrahim Abrash told the PIC that this meeting would get Israel out of its current political crisis caused by the Freedom Flotilla massacre and its repercussions at the international level, adding that the PA is trying to decrease the pressure on Israel rather than increase it.

The popular front for the liberation of Palestine also slammed the meeting, saying that the PA had no justification to attend such a meeting in view of the failure of its indirect negotiations with Israel and the escalating settlement and Judaization activities in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem.

The front said in a statement on Monday that such a meeting would serve Israel and its ongoing violation of the international law, and called on the PA to desist from its policies that are detrimental to the Palestinian people and their national cause.
