Don't Ask Palestinians if They Recognise Israel

Link

Dear friends,
please find below an "open letter" by Palestinian activist, Hanna Kawas, regarding the issue of the recognition of Israel and what the demand for such recognition means to Palestinians.

in solidarity, Kim

Introduction:

Please find below my response to the Canadian Immigrant Magazine, regarding an inaccuracy in an article they put [out] about Voice of Palestine (www.voiceofpalestine.ca) in Vancouver, BC. The magazine has since agreed to do an amendment, although it appears they will not be putting [out] the full open letter. However, this is an issue that all Palestinians face when trying to inform the Canadian public about our legitimate human and national rights.

Open Letter to Canadian Immigrant Magazine

Thank you for writing the article “Airwaves of Hope” http://www.canadianimmigrant.ca/immigrantstories/career/arti... that featured my volunteer work on Voice of Palestine.

Your reporting was generally positive and accurate except where you state: “But Kawas, who says he acknowledges the right of Israel to exist as a state, …”. I believe either you misunderstood what I told you, or the insertion of this statement was an editorial decision not to offend the pro-Israel propaganda machine.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain why such a statement is unfair, offensive and upsetting to me and to the vast majority of Palestinians.

1. Israel as a state was built on stolen Palestinian land and as a result of the ethnic cleansing of the majority of the Palestinian people from their homeland. In the process of the establishment of the state of Israel over four hundred Palestinian towns and villages were wiped out from the map of the world http://www.palestine-studies.org/books.aspx?id=591&href=deta... and two thirds of the Palestinian people were ethnically cleansed from their homeland and have never been allowed to return to their homes http://www.zmag.org/znet/viewArticle/3041.

2. Israel as a state is an apartheid supremacist state where Palestinians, both Muslims and Christians, that constitute 20% of the Israeli population, are treated as second-class citizens. Calls continue to this day to ethnically cleanse the indigenous Palestinian people from their homeland, and the current Israel foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman is a prime example. Israel is not a state for all of its citizens, and offers privileges based solely on religious affiliation.

3. The Zionist movement that built the state of Israel is a settler colonialist ideology that was never happy with the usurpation of just 78% of historic Palestine. It is an expansionist movement that continues to this day to steal more Palestinian land and build new illegal Jewish only settlements on this land, something the new Israeli government is set to not only maintain but also aggressively increase.

4. The state of Israel has never adopted a constitution nor defined its borders. As a result of this omission, Israeli borders keep expanding. From the 56% of Palestine the UN Partition Plan allotted to a “Jewish State” to now all of Palestine plus other Arab lands.

So the fair and logical question is: Do you want me to recognize the rape and dismemberment of my country Palestine? Do you want me to recognize the thief who stole my land and murdered my people? Do you want me to recognize a racist apartheid state that to this day does not allow me to go back home to live, nor be buried in my homeland where I was born? Do you want me to recognize a state with elastic borders that keeps committing injustices and war crimes on [a] daily basis?

During your interview with me, we were talking about a solution to the conflict and this is where, I believe, your misunderstanding has [a]risen. I am sure the space and political limitations on your article contributed to that, so let me repeat what I did say and what I believe in.

· I believe that there will never be peace or recognition, not tomorrow and not even in another sixty-one years, unless justice prevails. That means that first Israeli Jews should recognize the injustice that befell the Palestinian people in 1947/48, and second, pledge and work to rectify these injustices.

· I believe that Israeli racist laws should be dismantled as discrimination between Jew and non-Jew is institutionalized in Israeli laws and infrastructure. An example of this is the Israeli law of return, which applies to any Jew in the world (Israeli or not) while the same law does not apply to Palestinians holding Israeli citizenship because they happen to be Muslims or Christians. Without recognizing the inherent inequalities of such laws and reversing them there can be no peace with justice

· I believe that discrimination of any kind is not conducive to reconciliation. Discrimination on the basis of religious affiliation in land ownership is neither democratic nor ethical. For example, 93 per cent of the land in Israel, mostly stolen from Palestinians, is controlled by the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and its affiliates and is reserved by law for Jewish citizens only, something that is being challenged right now even in Israeli courts.

· Another manifestation of the injustices of the ethnic cleansing of 1947/48 is the creation of the Palestinian refugees. There are around six million Palestinian refugees and their descendents are crying out for justice and for UN resolutions regarding the Palestinian refugees to be implemented. Without the acknowledgement of the individual and collective rights of the Palestinian refugees, including their right of return and to compensation, there can be no mutual recognition or reconciliation.

Here is what I do recognize now at this moment in history.

* As I stated before I recognize the inalienable historic human and national rights of the Arab Palestinian people in historic Palestine.

* I recognize the fact that 60% of Israeli Jews are actually Arab Jews (Sephardim). They should be welcomed to live in any Arab country if they so choose and they are entitled to equal rights and privileges in any Arab country, especially in Palestine.

* I recognize that the vast majority of Israeli Jews are now native to historic Palestine (Israel/Palestine). At least three generations of Israeli Jews were born on the land since the original sin of 1947/48. They should not carry the guilt of their Zionist settler parents who committed the original sin and the initial ethnic cleansing of Palestine, but they are responsible for their own actions.

We have entered the 21st century. Peace anywhere in the world, and especially in the Middle East, will never be achieved if we have states that give privileges to one group over another, based on religion or ethnicity or gender. This is an outdated concept that will only hold all of us back from achieving true reconciliation.

Finally, only after the conditions of equality, decency and morality are met, and after a referendum to decide on the name of the country among the citizens of the land of Israel/Palestine, only then could I say I recognize Israel if that name is chosen by the majority of the people of Palestine/Israel.

Would we have asked the South African blacks to recognize Apartheid, before we took note of the legitimacy of their struggle? Would we have asked the French resistance to recognize the Vichy government and the Nazi regime before we acknowledged the credibility of their goals? No, and it is grossly unfair to tell Palestinians that they must recognize the state that is building an annexation wall on their land and massacring civilians in Gaza, before those same Palestinians will be allowed to have a say in their future.

Only with justice, freedom and equality for all will there be peace in historic Palestine, the Holy Land, and accordingly on earth.

Greek Orthodox Archbishop Atallah Hanna: Palestinians in Jerusalem are Natives, not Strangers!!!

Greek Orthodox Archbishop Atallah Hanna: Palestinians in Jerusalem are Natives, not Strangers!!!

Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church in Palestine and Jerusalem, Atallah Hanna, stated on Thursday that the Palestinian people in Jerusalem are the natives of the land and not strangers or intruders

His statements came during a Thursday afternoon visit to the protest tent in Sheikh Jarrah, in East Jerusalem, and the protest tent in Mount of Olives. He also visited areas where Israel recently demolished Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem.

Hanna slammed the illegal Israeli policies in East Jerusalem and said that Israel wants to demolish Palestinian homes and annex Palestinian lands.

“This is a racist policy, this policy is unjust and illegal”, he stated, “We reject these policies, the Palestinians in Jerusalem are natives, not intruders or strangers, but Israel wants to terrify and intimidate the Palestinians in order to leave the city”.

Hanna added that the Israeli policies are dangerous and require serious intervention from the Arabs, from the Muslims and Christians around the globe.

Archbishop Hanna returned to Palestine on Wednesday after touring in Denmark, Sweden and Canada, where he held several seminars on Jerusalem and the illegal Israeli policies.

On Arab Nationalism

On Arab Nationalism

Posted on April 11, 2009 by marcy/مارسي newman/نيومان

The other night sayyed hassan nasrallah gave a televised speech in response to charges from the egyptian regime and arrests of palestinians and lebanese in egypt. the speech is an important one as it reminds us a a key ideology that has its roots in egypt–that of arab nationalism–but one that the united states and the zionist killed with their puppet regimes following the death of gamal abdel nasser. nasser wasn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but what he stood for and what he preached–arab nationalism, challenging imperialism–has been lost for decades, not among the people so much as their leaders who are controlled by american-zionist imperialism that nasser fought against. nasrallah’s words are worth reading for they remind us of how arabs should be speaking and acting if they want to stand for morality and justice. his words are a reminder of why he is the only leader in the region who is worth listening to:

Sayyed Nasrallah then began the first axis of his speech by recalling of the main facts related to the whole case. According to his eminence, the Egyptian authorities have detained on November 19, 2008, a Lebanese citizen and accused him alongside other people of attempting to smuggle arms and equipment to Gaza.

“One month later, the Zionist entity launched its deadly aggression against Gaza,” Sayyed Nasrallah noted, recalling that Hezbollah’s position during the offensive was transparent and public. His eminence recalled that he has personally urged the Egyptian regime to open crossing with Gaza. “Then, it was our duty to denounce the Egyptian regime for its refusal to open the crossings,” Sayyed Nasrallah said. “Right after this stance, a political and commercial huge campaign was launched in Egypt against me and Hezbollah, under the instructions of the Egyptian authorities and intelligence. Yet, we considered the campaign as a reaction and a natural price for our stance and we were ready to pay it.”

Hezbollah Secretary General noted that the volume of the campaign launched by the Egyptian regime against his party was remarkable, recalling that some Sunni scholars also condemned the Egyptian President and even accused him of betrayal. “Yet, the Egyptian authorities didn’t condemn those scholars as they did with Hezbollah,” his eminence pointed out to conclude that their position with Hezbollah was different “because Hezbollah was a Resistance.” Sayyed Nasrallah went on to say that there are parties in the Arab world that are offensive against the Resistance and are very close to their American and Israeli masters in dealing with this issue.

Turning into facts, Sayyed Nasrallah recalled that Hezbollah is clear in its positions and has nothing to hide in whatever circumstances. Hence, his eminence declared that the Lebanese citizen Sami Chehab, who was detained in Egypt, was actually a member of Hezbollah. “Our brother Sami, is a member of Hezbollah, we don’t deny this,” Sayyed Nasrallah announced. “He was providing logistic help to the Palestinian resistance at the Egyptian-Palestinian borders,” his eminence added, noting that this was the only right thing that actually didn’t figure in the Egyptian claims. “All other charges against him are false.”

“If aiding the Palestinians is a crime, then I am proud of it,” Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized. His eminence noted “that the aim here is to agitate the Egyptian people and to defame Hezbollah’s pure and bright image. This aims to only please the Americans and Israelis for the Egyptian regime has failed by all means.”

Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized that the one who should be charged and condemned over this case was not Sami or his friends but the Egyptian regime. “The Egyptian regime should be charged and condemned for besieging Gaza,” his eminence said, noting that the mentioned regime is working day and night on destroying Gaza tunnels.

The Resistance leader expressed regret because the Egyptian regime was escalating its aggression against the resistance movements in the region instead of backing and supporting them. “We were expecting the Egyptian regime to take the initiative and invite the Arabs to discuss how to face the Israeli threats, but unfortunately we saw that the Egyptian regime decided instead to increase his conflict with the Resistance.”

To conclude on the topic, Sayyed Nasrallah fully rejected and denied all charges that Hezbollah was intending to launch an act of aggression in Egypt or at any part of the world. His eminence stressed that his party does not intend to enter into any form of enmity and conflict with any Arab, Islamic or international regime in the world, confirming that its sole enemy remains the Zionist entity.

“The charge of attempting to spread the Shiite way of thinking and practices is baseless,” Sayyed Nasrallah said, adding that no single individual can do so in Egypt. “To accuse us of being agents working for others is also meaningless,” his eminence emphasized.

Sayyed Nasrallah, meanwhile, expressed regret over the attempts of some Arabs to present Hezbollah as Al-Qaeda, confirming that Hezbollah does not have extensions abroad and is not involved in any conflict in other Arab countries.

“Hezbollah is a purely Lebanese party from its leadership to its base and it has no branches anywhere else,” the Resistance leader asserted. “Hebzollah’s mission is to protect Lebanon from the Zionist danger,” his eminence recalled, stressing that the party doesn’t actually interfere in any internal conflict of any state in the world. “However, in facing the Zionist criminality, it’s our duty to help the Palestinians, just as it’s their duty to help us in the same circumstances.”

Sayyed Nasrallah also stressed that his party had nothing to do with what is going on in Yemen and Bahrain. “Al-Hayat newspaper reported that Hezbollah members have helped the Huthies (a rebel group in Yemen) behind the back of their leadership,” Sayyed Nasrallah recalled. His eminence stressed that Hezbollah is a well disciplined party and there are no Hezbollah members who operate alone but stressed his party has nothing to do with the whole issue. His eminence also emphasized the claims in some Gulf dailies over backing opposition figures in Bahrain. “No one in Bahrain has asked anything from us, and even if there was such request, we can’t respond favorably.”

Sayyed Nasrallah then addressed the Arab regimes and leaders, urging them to leave Hezbollah alone. “Don’t put on Hezbollah’s back more than it can bear,” Sayyed Nasrallah said. “We’re clear and transparent and whenever we do something wrong we have the necessary courage to admit it,” Sayyed Nasrallah said.

His eminence called on the media to verify of all their news stories, and examine all what the intelligence branches are doing and making up. His eminence concluded by stressing that his party was not engaging into a battle with the Egyptian regime. “We disagreed with them over the Gaza aggression and we’re still in disagreement with them over this issue, and that’s it.”

for those who want some context on arab nationalism, al jazeera did a documentary about arab nationalism that is worth watching. it reminds us of the core value that desperately needs to be resuscitated:

Nasserism had taken Arabism a step further. He believed Arabs would be stronger if united, that they shared a common struggle against colonial powers and that the liberation of Palestine should be an Arab duty.

Nasser’s vision extended far beyond Egypt. He believed that the lessons of the revolution should be applied in other Arab countries.

His charisma and influence were so great that he inspired Arabs elsewhere to dream of a unified Arab nation. His defiant attitude towards Egypt’s former colonial masters made him even more popular. Nasserism swept the region.

here is the rather long, but important, documentary:

why unity?

unity betrayed

trials & tribulations

a cause for unity

unity experiment

disillusion

the jewish factor

disunity

Flashback:

Both Arab nationalism and Islam have failed, and failed badly.

Egyptian Claims against Hezbollah Fabricated

Contributed by Nadia

10/04/2009 The Egyptian aggressive claims against Hezbollah continue to trigger furious reactions here and there…

Indeed, while Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah is scheduled to declare his party's official stance over the claims during a speech to be delivered Friday night, the refutation of Egypt's accusations came from its own ground putting these claims as part of a campaign against the Resistance party over its objection to the Egyptian regime's behavior during the Israeli aggression against Gaza.

In this context, the general supervisor of the Muslim Brotherhood's mission in Egypt, Ibrahim Munir, denounced on Friday the Egyptian regime's charges against Hezbollah as fabricated.

Munir said that the feelings of failure and fiasco were dominating on the Egyptian regime nowadays following the Western attempts, namely the American, to approach to Turkey and Iran and also as a result of its deadlock at the internal and external levels.

"The Egyptian regime is seeking, through its claims against Hezbollah, to tell the West and the Zionist entity that it was still able to achieve the goal of wiping out the Resistance in the region," Munir emphasized.

Munir added that Hezbollah Secretary General was very popular among Egyptians for the achievements made by his brave Resistance against the Zionist enemy.

On Wednesday, Egypt's state prosecutor claimed that Hezbollah was plotting to carry out attacks inside the country and "spreading Shiite ideology in Egypt."

According to a statement from the prosecutor, "Egypt's attorney general received a note from state security about information confirmed by questioning about Hezbollah leaders sending some elements to the country to attract members to work with the organization and persuade them to join its ranks with the aim of carrying out acts of aggression inside the country."
However, the statement did not give details of possible attacks.

Hezbollah stressed on many occasions that it had no activity outside Lebanon and that its sole focus was on countering Israeli threats against Lebanon and confronting any Zionist aggression on its soil.

Egypt and the Aggressive Claims Against Hezbollah

09/04/2009 Israel and Egypt are looking for ways to get even with ‘opponents’ or to escape forward.

For Israel, Egypt’s most recent critical stance regarding Avigdore Lieberman’s appointment as FM and Cairo’s refusal to attend a ceremony marking 30 years of relations, shows that it is no longer "business as usual" between the two countries. Also, the inevitable vengeance for the 2008 assassination of top Islamic Resistance commander martyr Imad Moghniyeh is still haunting Israel.

Generally speaking, the row between Egypt and the Zionist entity could be settled through diplomatic channels. Yet, Israel’s new extremist government is unlikely to stand silent on Cairo’s stance. Israel has defied the US and the international community and has tumbled down years of hard talks by refusing a two state solution in occupied Palestine.

The Zionist state’s coup de maitre came Wednesday when it warned Israelis of “an imminent attack” in Egypt’s Sinai and called on the several thousand Israelis in the Peninsula to leave immediately and abandon plans to mark “Passover” holiday there.

Meanwhile, Egypt was still disarrayed especially after its isolation by most Arabs was established in the Doha Arab summit, mainly for its insistence on isolating Gaza and keeping the Rafah crossing closed during war.
Cairo has adopted the policy of escaping forward to discharge distress on the one hand and to take vengeance on Hezbollah, the party whose chief criticized the Egyptian regime for its position on the Israeli war on Gaza.

On Wednesday, Egypt’s state prosecutor claimed that Hezbollah was plotting to carry out attacks inside the country and ‘spreading Shiite ideology in Egypt.”

According to a statement from the prosecutor, “Egypt's attorney general received a note from state security about information confirmed by questioning about Hezbollah leaders sending some elements to the county to attract members to work with the organization and persuade them to join its ranks with the aim of carrying out acts of aggression inside the country."
However, the statement did not give details of possible attacks.

Hezbollah stressed on many occasions that it had no activity outside Lebanon and that its sole focus was on countering Israeli threats against Lebanon and confronting any Zionist aggression on its soil.

Nasralla set the Record Straight with Pharoah, and "Revolutionary" Anal-sists

The One and Only Credible Arab Leader Speaks to Set the Record Straight.....

Sayyed Nasrallah to Comment Friday on Egyptian Claims against Hezbollah

Al-Manar

"09/04/2009 Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah is scheduled to deliver a speech through a large screen on Friday evening (17.30 GMT, 20.30 Beirut Time).

Sayyed Nasrallah would comment, during his speech set to be broadcasted by Al-Manar TV, on the latest Egyptian aggressive claims against Hezbollah.

Sayyed Nasrallah would also tackle the latest developments in Lebanon and the region, namely the forthcoming parliamentary elections, during the speech.

On Wednesday, Egypt's state prosecutor claimed that Hezbollah was plotting to carry out attacks inside the country and "spreading Shiite ideology in Egypt."

According to a statement from the prosecutor, "Egypt's attorney general received a note from state security about information confirmed by questioning about Hezbollah leaders sending some elements to the county to attract members to work with the organization and persuade them to join its ranks with the aim of carrying out acts of aggression inside the country."

My Comment:

No doubt Nasrallah is the most credible Arabic and Moslem leader.

BUT

Tony in emphasining that Nasrallah is One and Only Credible Arab Leader, is mocking Palestinan. Syrian and Irani Leaders rather than praisng Nasrallal.

Mashaal and Hamas Leaders are not credible because they never set the records straight with Cairo Taraitor.

This how Tony use Hezballah and Nasralla to cover his Zio-Ass. He, The Great Anal-ysist believes that Bashar Al-Assad is following the steps of Sadat, but he (Tony) never dared to criticise Nasralla for not setting the record staight with Syria, or with Iran...

( IAM NOT PUTTING SYRIA AND IRAN ON THE SAME BASKET WITH MOBARAK). In fact, despite secondary difference, Nasralla records were always straight, he considered both Syria and Iran as his partners in the Victories of 2000 and 2006.

Its is Geopolitics My Ass. God gave you brain (with one cell). Use it and think why Nasrallah avoided setting he record straight with Mubarak during 2006 war? Why he did it during the war on Gaza?

He did it on behalf of Hamas, most likely in co-ordination with Hamas. He did it because Mubarak contols Rafah Crossing, not Masnaa Crossing. Its Geopolitics STUPID

I would say to Tony: The best you can do is going to Toilet, before writing any comment.
"Kess Ikht ele alamak essaysi" (Using Layla Anwar words)

Nasrallah shall appear on Almanar after 7 hours. So you have enough time to some Anal-ysing

Update:

Nasralla, The One and Only Credible Arab Leader did it, "he disapointed the PP Analysist", and set the record straight, not only with Mubarak and other Arab puppets, but with some Arabs attempting /pushing "to present Hezbollah as Al-Qaeda, confirming that Hezbollah does not have extensions abroad and is not involved in any conflict in other Arab countries."

"His eminence stressed that his party does not intend to enter into any form of enmity and conflict with any Arab, Islamic or international regime in the world, confirming that its sole enemy remains the Zionist entity."

"However, in facing the Zionist criminality, it's our duty to help the Palestinians, just as it's their duty to help us in the same circumstances."

His eminence recalled that he has personally urged the Egyptian regime to open crossing with Gaza. "Then, it was our duty to denounce the Egyptian regime for its refusal to open the crossings," Sayyed Nasrallah said. "Right after this stance, a political and commercial huge campaign was launched in Egypt against me and Hezbollah, under the instructions of the Egyptian authorities and intelligence. Yet, we considered the campaign as a reaction and a natural price for our stance and we were ready to pay it."

"If aiding the Palestinians is a crime, then I am proud of it," Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized. His eminence noted "that the aim here is to agitate the Egyptian people and to defame Hezbollah's pure and bright image. This aims to only please the Americans and Israelis for the Egyptian regime has failed by all means."

In the Arabic version (Complete) he said:

"During the hard days of 2006 I addressed Arab Leaders: We don't want anything from you otherthan leaving us alone, just don't conspire on us."

CAN HAMAS SAY THE SAME TO MUBARAK AND ARAB LEADER?? IT IS GEOPOLITICS STUPID. WITH FRIENDS LIKE IRAN AND SYRIA, OPEN BORDERS WITH SYRIA, NASRALLA WAS ABLE TO SAY TO ARAB LEADER: GO TO HELL

"but as Palestine is concerned we demand Arab leaders to suport Palestinians, to break the Seige.'

In other words Nasralla did what what Hamas, because of geopoltics, can't do

Nasralla confirmed (in the Arabic text) that the Arab Puppets cornered by Hezbullah victories, cleanhands, transparcy has nothing to say, to spoil the great image of Hezbulla other than:

  • Hezbullah is spreading Shiism.
  • Nasrallah is an Irani agent.

THE TRANSLATOR WAS NOT SUCESSFULL IN TRANSLATING THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

THE PROPER TRANSLATION IS:
"To acuse us of being agents for Iran is also meaningless. Hezbullah and me are Iran friends, proud of that Friendship, wishing all resistance groups in Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, and all the regoin to have Friends like IRAN and SYRIA" his eminence emphasized.

Being Syria "Lover", Tony would like Almanar Translation, not mine.

I wonder why he use diferent scale when Hamas is concerned?

Would TONY dare to say to Nasrallah (The One and Only Credible Arab Leader) the what he said to Hamas??

[["COMMENT: Say What?? This is a "Revolutionary" Movement leading the Palestinian struggle??

Nasralla set the Record Straight.....

Sayyed Nasrallah Denies Claims, Rejects Enmity with Any Arab State

Hussein Assi Readers Number : 134

10/04/2009 Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah denied on Friday the Egyptian aggressive claims against the Resistance party, stressing that his party has no intentions or plans at all to destabilize the Egyptian security.

Speaking through a TV screen, Sayyed Nasrallah stressed that Hezbollah has no intention to be enemy with any Arab system or with any other state, confirming that Hezbollah's sole enemy was represented through the Zionist entity. His eminence expressed regret over the attempts of some Arabs to present Hezbollah as Al-Qaeda, confirming that Hezbollah does not have extensions abroad and is not involved in any conflict in other Arab countries.

His eminence also tackled the Lebanese forthcoming parliamentary elections, stressing that all rumors about conflicts between his party and the Amal movement were baseless, stressing that the fact that Amal nominated two of its members for the Shiite seat in Beirut-2 district was part of a consensus. His eminence also denied any intention to topple the Lebanese President following the elections, accusing some parties of attempting to disrupt the good relations between Hezbollah and President Michel Sleiman.

Sayyed Nasrallah began his speech by noting that his speech was programmed to be one of a series of weekly speeches to tackle the forthcoming parliamentary elections and other domestic issues. "However, the Egyptian accusations against Hezbollah and myself turned to be the talk of the town, and we found that the issue deserves more than a press statement," Sayyed Nasrallah said.

His eminence noted that addressing the latest Egyptian accusations against him would be an opportunity to explain, once again, Hezbollah view and policy towards the Arab world and the Arab different regimes.

SAMI CHEHAB IS A MEMBER OF HEZBOLLAH WHO WAS HELPING PALESTINIANS

Sayyed Nasrallah then began the first axis of his speech by recalling of the main facts related to the whole case. According to his eminence, the Egyptian authorities have detained on November 19, 2008, a Lebanese citizen and accused him alongside other people of attempting to smuggle arms and equipment to Gaza.

"Yet, the Egyptian authorities didn't condemn those scholars as they did with Hezbollah," his eminence pointed out to conclude that their position with Hebollah was different "because Hezbollah was a Resistance." Sayyed Nasrallah went on to say that there are parties in the Arab world that are offensive against the Resistance and are very close to their American and Israeli masters in dealing with this issue.

CHARGES THAT HEZBOLLAH WAS PLANNING FOR ATTACKS IN EGYPT REJECTED

Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized that the one who should be charged and condemned over this case was not Sami or his friends but the Egyption regime. "The Egyptian regime should be charged and condemned for besieging Gaza," his eminence said, noting that the mentioned regime is working day and night on destroying Gaza tunnels.

The Resistance leader expressed regret because the Egyptian regime was escalating its aggression against the resistance movements in the region instead of backing and supporting them. "We were expecting the Egyptian regime to take the initiative and invite the Arabs to discuss how to face the Israeli threats, but unfortunately we saw that the Egyptian regime decided instead to increase his conflict with the Resistance."

"The charge of attempting to spread the Shiite way of thinking and practices is baseless," Sayyed Nasrallah said, adding that no single individual can do so in Egypt. "To accuse us of being agents working for others is also meaningless," his eminence emphasized.

THE TRANSLATOR MISSED THIS PART OF THE ARABIC (Original) VERSION:
"To acuse us of being agents for Iran is also meaningless. Hezbulla and me are Iran friends, proud of that Freiendship, wishing all resistance groups in Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, and all the regoin to have Friends like IRAN and SYRIA" his eminence emphasized.

SOME ARE ATTEMPTING TO PRESENT HEZBOLLAH AS AL-QAEDA

Sayyed Nasrallah, meanwhile, expressed regret over the attempts of some Arabs to present Hezbollah as Al-Qaeda, confirming that Hezbollah does not have extensions abroad and is not involved in any conflict in other Arab countries.

"Hezbollah is a purely Lebanese party from its leadership to its base and it has no branches anywhere else," the Resistance leader asserted. "Hebzollah's mission is to protect Lebanon from the Zionist danger," his eminence recalled, stressing that the party doesn't actually interfere in any internal conflict of any state in the world. "However, in facing the Zionist criminality, it's our duty to help the Palestinians, just as it's their duty to help us in the same circumstances."

DON'T PUT ON HEZBOLLAH'S BACK MORE THAN IT CAN BEAR

Sayyed Nasrallah also stressed that his party had nothing to do with what is going on in Yemen and Bahrain. "Al-Hayat newspaper reported that Hezbollah members have helped the Huthies (a rebel group in Yemen) behind the back of their leadership," Sayyed Nasrallah recalled. His eminence stressed that Hezbollah is a well disciplined party and there are no Hezbollah members who operate alone but stressed his party has nothing to do with the whole issue. His eminence also emphasized the claims in some Gulf dailies over backing opposition figures in Bahrain. "No one in Bahrain has asked anything from us, and even if there was such request, we can't respond favorably."

Sayyed Nasrallah then addressed the Arab regimes and leaders, urging them to leave Hezbollah alone. "Don't put on Hezbollah's back more than it can bear," Sayyed Nasrallah said. "We're clear and transparent and whenever we do something wrong we have the necessary courage to admit it," Sayyed Nasrallah said.

His eminence called on the media to verify of all their news stories, and examine all what the intelligence branches are doing and making up. His eminence concluded by stressing that his party was not engaging into a battle with the Egyptian regime. "We disagreed with them over the Gaza aggression and we're still in disagreement with them over this issue, and that's it."

WE WERE FULLY CONVINCED TO VOTE FOR PRESIDENT SLEIMAN
Meanwhile, Sayyed Nasrallah devoted the last part of his speech to the forthcoming parliamentary elections. His eminence started by commenting on some "analyzes" of his last speech that claimed that the opposition was preparing to topple the Lebanese President.

"There are parties who insist on strife, unrest and struggle, and that is what they opt for. They don't want the country to come together," Sayyed Nasrallah said. His eminence recalled that when he said that the Parliament elects the President, he was enumerating the general roles assumed by the Members of the Parliament and what makes any parliamentary elections important.

"We were fully convinced to vote for President Michel Sleiman and we're in good terms with him," Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized. "We and the Free Patriotic Movement have elected President Sleiman by our free and full will, and we have good and confident relations with him since he was an army commander," his eminence added.

To end, Sayyed Nasrallah emphasized that the relations between his party and the Amal Movement were strategic, denying the presence of any conflicts between the two parties. "We agreed on Amal movement nominating two of its members for the Shiite candidate in Beirut's second district," his eminence declared.

"The opposition will work hard to carry on honest and democratic elections, which we hope will be in our favor," Sayyed Nasrallah said at the end of his speech.

Israel: the age of permanent war?

Link

Tom Ricks, at FP/BD, here

"...But I worry about its long-term implications for the security of Israel, especially the notion of not fighting by the rules, which the article doesn't really explain, but which I think if done badly could further undermine Western popular support for Israel.

He doesn't offer much hope for the future. Israel is recognizing that it is in a permanent state of war, he concludes: There is no such thing as winning in this new kind of war. The war is ongoing, with periods of more violence and periods of less violence, during which the enemy regroups and plans his next attack. When we feel the enemy is getting strong, we must be prepared to make preemptive strikes, hard and fast at key targets, with viciousness, as the enemy would do to us. Only then can we acquire, not peace, but sustained periods of relative calm."

Sayyed Nasrallah to Comment Today on Egyptian Claims against Hezbollah

Copied from PP With this Title:

However, the statement did not give details of possible attacks.

Hezbollah stressed on many occasions that it had no activity outside Lebanon and that its sole focus was on countering Israeli threats against Lebanon and confronting any Zionist aggression on its soil."

Iraq: Six Years On

Huge Protest Marks Baghdad's Fall

09/04/2009 Tens of thousands of followers of anti-American Muslim Shi'ite cleric Sayyed Moqtada al-Sadr thronged Baghdad on Thursday to mark the sixth anniversary of the city's fall to U.S. occupation troops, and to demand they leave immediately.

"Down, down USA," the demonstrators chanted as Ali al-Marwani, a Sadrist official, denounced the U.S. occupation of Iraq that began with the fall of Baghdad on April 9, 2003, and the toppling of Saddam Hussein's statue in Firdos Square.

The crowds of Sadr supporters stretched from the giant Sadr City slum in northeast Baghdad to the square around 5 km (3 miles) away, where protesters burnt an effigy featuring the face of former U.S. President George W. Bush, who ordered the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

"God, unite us, return our riches, free the prisoners from the prisons, return sovereignty to our country ... make our country free from the occupier, and prevent the occupier from stealing our oil," Sadr said in a message read by a Sadr movement aide Asaad al-Nassiri.

"God, make us the liberators of our land," the message said before exhorting the demonstrators to shake hands with each other and Iraqi police overseeing the march.

President Barack Obama, who flew into Baghdad on an unannounced visit on Tuesday, has ordered all U.S. occupation combat troops to leave Iraq by the end of August 2010, leaving a residual force of 35,000-50,000 trainers, advisers and logistics personnel.

Under a bilateral security agreement signed with Bush, all U.S. occupation troops must withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2011.

Sayyed al-Sadr’s Mehdi Army fighters fought pitched battles against U.S. occupation forces during the U.S.-led invasion but have retreated from the frontlines after Sadr called on them to abandon armed combat and turn themselves into a social welfare organization.

'Fallujah never leaves my mind'

By Laith Mushtaq, cameraman, Al Jazeera

Fallujah was almost flattened after the US assaults that intensified in 2004 [EPA]

"We heard people screaming inside the hospital, they did not have any drugs left. They had to cut legs without anything at all"

Laith Mushtaq was one of only two non-embedded cameramen working throughout the April 2004 'battle for Fallujah' in which 600 civilians died.

Five years on, he recounts the events he witnessed and filmed.

"What you saw on your TV sets at home reflects only ten per cent of the reality. Also, if you watch those pictures at home, you can change the channel.

But we were in the middle. We smell. We feel, see, and touch everything. We could touch the bodies, but we couldn't change the channel. We were the channel.

When I think of Fallujah, I think of the smell. The smell was driving me crazy. In a dead body, there is a kind of liquid. Yellow liquid. The smell is disgusting, really. It sticks in your nose. You cannot eat anymore.

And you can't get the pictures off your mind, because every day you see the same: Explosion, death, explosion, death, death.

After work, you sit down and notice there are pieces of flesh on your shoes and blood on your trousers. But you don't have time to ask why.

In April 2004, I remember I was in the Baghdad office and my boss said: "We have information that the Americans will attack Fallujah. We need a crew to go inside Fallujah immediately. Who can go there?"

I said: "Yes. Me. I can go there." I didn't hesitate at all.

Filming was a 'duty'

Laith filmed this family attempting to flee Fallujah - ten minutes later they were dead

I knew the price to pay was high. Maybe my life. But if I'm afraid to die, then I shouldn't hold a camera in any dangerous place. I know some day I will die. Tomorrow. Next month. Next year. Or in ten years. I don't know.

But the point is that maybe I will die in my bed. Or maybe I will die doing something good.

Fallujah was my duty. I had to show the truth to people outside of Iraq.
By truth, I mean what really happened in the streets. Not a political message, just what I could see with my own eyes. Because some people were talking about Fallujah and said "there is nothing happening," or "the people are okay" and "everything is stable".

It would be great if everything had been stable. I would be happy if nothing had happened. I would shoot it and show it, with pleasure. But the reality was very different.

One day, I think it was April 9, 2004, someone with a loudspeaker in Fallujah's main mosque said: "The Americans will open a gate and women and children can go out."

As soon as he had finished, all the women and children of Fallujah tried to find a car to leave the city but when they were in the streets, the US forces opened fire.

There's a picture that I cannot forget. An old woman with three children, I saw her on the street and took a picture of her and the children.

She said: "We don't have any men here, can anyone help us?" Many of the men from Fallujah worked in Baghdad, once the city was sealed off they could not get back to their wives and children.

So, some men helped her, I decided to film the scene and then I sat down to smoke.

Ten minutes later, an ambulance came down the road. I ran to follow the ambulance and when they opened the door, I saw the same woman and her children - but they were in pieces.

I still remember the nurses couldn't carry the woman because she was in too many pieces, people were jumping back when they saw it. Then, one nurse shouted: "Hey, she looks like your mother."

In the Iraqi language that means: "She could be your mother, so treat her like you'd treat your mom." Everyone stood up and tried to carry a piece because they needed to get her out quickly, because the ambulance was needed for other people.

We were standing in front of the main hospital, but we would have needed 12 cameramen in order to cover all that happened that day.

There were five, six ambulances coming and going with dead and injured people. When I filmed people inside the hospital, there were so many outside. When I filmed outside, there were so many inside.

Me and all of the Al Jazeera crew, we felt paralysed. It was bigger than us. We were only two cameramen and two reporters. It's not enough.

Reporters, editors in Doha and Baghdad, the people of Fallujah, all of them kept calling for us to film what was happening, and the ambulances just kept coming and going.

We heard people screaming inside the hospital, because they did not have any drugs left. They had to cut legs without anything at all.

At some point, I couldn't move anymore. I sat down on the street and kept smoking. I couldn't move. I see what's happening around me, but I can't move. Khallas [enough]. I didn't have any energy left.

Corpse-strewn streets

But then you remember the heroes of Fallujah that nobody talks about.

Like this old man. He had a pick-up truck and every day, he drove through the streets and listened to the people who told him there is a dead body in this or that street, but nobody can go there because there's a sniper.

Then he went there, stopped his car, and on his knees, he'd crawl to the body and carry it to his pick-up car. One day he brought five bodies.

Some of them had died more than a week ago, but no one had dared to carry them away. Some, the dogs had started eating them.

While I was inside Fallujah, I knew that every single move of my camera is not for me. It's for the people inside. And the people outside who should know what happened. It's like an SOS.

The Americans said our pictures stirred up hatred against them. But what I did was only showing what their army did on the ground.

I don't hate them, I don't want vengeance, I just wish they had understood what they were doing.

And sometimes I wish my mind was more like a computer that you can reformat. Or that you can go to hospital and get pieces of your memory removed.

In Fallujah, there were moments when I held my camera beside a dead body and I felt I haven't got a heart anymore. Because of the dose of war that I've seen. It was something like an overdose.

Not just for me inside, also for my family in Baghdad.

The month that I spent in Fallujah, my mom was watching TV all the time, because she knew her son was there and she knew those were the pictures that he had shot. Sometimes we couldn't talk for a couple of days.

One day, she heard on the news that the Americans would try to reach the middle of the city. She couldn't bear it anymore. She went to the Al Jazeera office in Baghdad and cried: "Give me my son back!"

I was embarrassed, but my mother is, well, a mother.

Around the same time, in the evening, we got a phone call from the general manager of Al Jazeera. He wanted to talk to every member of the crew. The driver. Me. Everyone.

He said: "Thank you very much, we appreciate what you're doing." And then he said: "If you want to leave Fallujah, we'll send someone and will try to get you out of there."

We all refused. Everyone wanted to stay.

Why should we be better than the women and children of Fallujah? No one had called them to ask whether they wanted to leave."

In a written statement given to Al Jazeera, Lieutenant Colonel Curtis L Hill, public affairs director for the multi-national force in the west of Iraq, denied US-led forces fired on "unarmed civilians" .

"Coalition forces were there to capture the terrorists responsible for the death of four American contractors. They would not have fired on unarmed civilians attempting to leave the city," he said.

Specifically asked if a ceasefire had been called on April 9, he said troops had "halted the advance although I believe the date was 11 April".
