TUNIS, (PIC)-- Farouq Qaddoumi, the head of the PLO political department, has said that he did not recognize the new Ramallah government formed under Salam Fayyad, describing its formation as "meaningless".

Qaddoumi criticized former PA chief Mahmoud Abbas in a statement to Tunisian electronic paper Al-Sawab published on Thursday for disregarding democratic basics that could not be overlooked.

He charged that the illegitimate government of Fayyad was a pointless step in one of the most sacred issues.

The new Fayyad government was meant to distract the Palestinian people away from "the siege, poverty and obvious control of the American General Keith Dayton".

Qaddoumi called for participation of all Palestinian forces in the political process through comprehensive dialog.

The new Fayyad government took the oath before Abbas on Tuesday in what was described by observers as an escalatory and harmful step to national reconciliation efforts and the next dialog session scheduled for early July in Cairo.
